Curriculum Highlights for This Month: What Your Child Is Learning at Warrior

At Warrior Martial Arts Academy, we believe parents are an essential part of a child’s martial arts journey. That’s why we’re committed to transparency, communication, and partnership when it comes to your child’s training.

Each month, we publish a martial arts curriculum overview—a detailed snapshot of what students are working on in class, why it matters, and how families can support that learning at home.

If you’ve ever wondered, “What exactly is my child practicing in class this month?” — this blog is for you.

Let’s break it down by age group, belt level, and life skill.

🔰 Little Warriors (Ages 5–7)

🥋 Technical Focus: Stances & Coordination

This month, Little Warriors are working on:

  • Horse stance and forward stance
  • Step-in punches and cover blocks
  • Basic movement transitions (step-and-slide, pivot turns)

Why it matters: At this age, coordination and body awareness are key developmental milestones. We’re building muscle memory, balance, and control—laying the foundation for more advanced techniques later.

💬 Life Skill Focus: Listening & Respect

Mat chats and class discussions center on:

  • Following instructions the first time
  • Raising your hand to speak
  • Making eye contact with instructors and peers

Home connection tip:
Practice “first-time listening” with simple instructions at home like “Please put your shoes away” or “Come to the table.” Praise them for listening the first time, just like we do in class.

💪 Mighty Warriors (Ages 8–12)

🥋 Technical Focus: Combinations & Defense

Mighty Warriors are practicing:

  • Punch + kick combos (jab-cross-round kick)
  • Defensive movements: covers, slips, and rolls
  • Controlled partner drills with pads

Why it matters: This age group is developing power, precision, and reflexes. By linking movements into combinations, they learn to flow under pressure and build real confidence in their ability to defend themselves.

💬 Life Skill Focus: Self-Control

We’re emphasizing:

  • Managing emotions during sparring and partner drills
  • Controlling our body language and words under stress
  • Practicing stillness and active listening

Home connection tip:
Ask your child how they showed self-control this week—in school, at home, or with siblings. Use the same vocabulary we use in class to reinforce consistency.

🧠 Skills Stripe Program Highlight: Confidence

Across all age groups, this month’s Skills Stripe theme is Confidence.

Students are working toward earning a stripe by:

  • Speaking loudly and clearly when called upon
  • Performing their moves in front of the class
  • Introducing themselves to a new student or partner

Parent bonus:
Each student receives a take-home sheet explaining the character skill, with a task that can be completed at home and verified by a parent.

This month’s task:
✅ Say hello and introduce yourself to three new people.
✅ Practice saying your name, age, and favorite activity with strong posture and voice.

🎓 Junior Leadership Program (Invite-Only)

🥋 Curriculum Focus: Modeling & Mentoring

Our junior coaches are learning:

  • How to demonstrate techniques in front of younger students
  • Giving appropriate praise using the “Praise–Challenge–Praise” method
  • How to hold pads correctly and guide partner drills

💬 Leadership Focus: Responsibility & Initiative

They’re practicing:

  • Showing up early
  • Checking class plans
  • Helping instructors without being asked

Why it matters:
We’re preparing our leadership students to be future black belts, coaches, and role models—not just in martial arts, but in life.

🔁 Belt Stripe Review Cycle

We’re currently in Week 3 of a 4-week belt stripe cycle, which means students are being assessed on:

  • Accuracy and control of their movements
  • Retention of combinations and self-defense techniques
  • Focus, behavior, and consistency in class

Students who demonstrate readiness may earn a new stripe this week and move one step closer to testing for their next rank.

Reminder for families:

  • Keep attendance consistent
  • Make sure uniforms are clean and gear is brought to each class
  • Ask your child what stripe they’re working toward this month

🔄 Reinforcing the Curriculum at Home

Even a few minutes a day can make a huge difference. Here are 3 easy ways to reinforce this month’s curriculum at home:

  1. “Show me your stance” challenge: Ask your child to hold their best horse stance for 30 seconds. Add a timer and make it a fun contest!
  2. Mat chat recap questions: Ask, “What did your instructor say about confidence today?” or “What does self-control mean to you?”
  3. Practice introductions: Have your child practice a confident self-introduction at the dinner table or to a family member.

When parents reinforce lessons at home, progress doubles.

Final Thoughts: Progress You Can See

Every drill, every mat chat, every skill stripe—it’s all part of a well-designed curriculum that builds not just martial artists, but strong, focused, and confident individuals.

We don’t just “go with the flow.” At Warrior Martial Arts Academy, we teach with purpose, monitor with precision, and celebrate every step of the journey.

Whether your child is mastering their first punch or preparing for their next belt, they’re developing life skills that will serve them far beyond the mat.
